Research for the EU Media approach regarding Third Country Nationals (TCN) and migration issues

Migration Media M As a result of third country migration, multiculturalism and ethnic differences comply a big part of modern European society’s reality. Unfortunately, the cultural and ethnic differences are not mirrored adequately in the media and in many cases are reflecting prejudice, negativity and stereotyping references using, at the same time, TCN as scapegoats for EU socioeconomic problems. This approach makes integration of TCN more challenging to the local society and, at the same time, is empowering racist trends and behaviors.

Within the framework of this action, a number of activities will focus on research, awareness raising and dissemination of findings. The results will extract suggestions to relevant stakeholders, including Cyprus media, regarding the design of integration actions aiming at unbiased broadcasting of issues related to TCN.

The aim of the action is the research and evaluation of the different perceptions presented via the media regarding TCN and migration in general. Research will also be conducted in other European counties in order to identify the way media in other European countries present migration and TCN news.

Through a comparative report on Cyprus, Sweden, UK and Italy, the action will end up particular suggestions and good practices adjusted to the special needs and conditions of the Cypriot society for the development of an action plan for integration and TCN in general.
